Your bold area rug should fit either the room and it’s furniture or should fit the “space.” A space is, for example, if you have a sitting area and want the rug to go in the middle. A too large rug will crowd the room and furniture and make the room feel smaller than it is. A too small rug will look awkward.

If you are decorating with a bold area rug, you have probably invested in dramatic colors or prints. For this reason, the rest of the furniture has to work with the rug. If your rug is patterned, choose furniture that highlights the softer tones in the pattern. If you so choose, furniture with patterned fabrics can look good, but subtle patterns are key.
